Craft Conscious CIC

Craft Conscious is proud to be a Community Interest Company (CIC). But what does that mean for you?

As a CIC, we’re a special kind of business with a heart. We’re committed to using our profits and assets to benefit our community. This means:

  • Every purchase of our products or use of our services supports our social mission
  • We’re accountable and transparent about our community impact
  • We’re here for the long haul, focused on sustainable positive change

In essence, when you choose Craft Conscious – whether for our products or services – you’re not just a customer. You’re investing in a better, more inclusive community.

Ed's Story

The reason Craft Conscious exists

Craft Conscious CIC was founded in 2015, inspired by Ed, a remarkable young man whose life, kindness, and tragic passing in 2012 left a deep void in his family. The idea for creating Craft Conscious came from seeing how, even three years after his death, well-meaning but hurtful comments continued to affect his mother. This led to our initial focus on providing support through creative crafting sessions for those struggling with grief, creating a safe space where people wouldn’t have to face unintentionally painful remarks.

Our work honours Ed’s memory by embodying the kindness and understanding he showed others, while addressing the critical gaps in mental health support that he himself experienced. These gaps in mental health support continue to affect many people today, something I’ve witnessed through both personal and professional experience. From there, our mission evolved to include broader support for those experiencing grief, mental health challenges, chronic illness, and disability.

How we're different from a traditional business

  • We reinvest our profits into our mission of supporting individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and neurodivergence.

  • Our success is measured by the positive impact we have on our community, not just financial metrics.

  • We maintain transparency by documenting and reporting our community benefit activities.

Our Unique Approach

  • Corporate Training: We educate businesses on how to better understand and support their chronically ill, neurodivergent, and disabled employees, as well as those experiencing bereavement or on long-term sick leave.
  • Entrepreneurial Coaching: We offer specialised coaching for disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent entrepreneurs, helping them navigate the unique challenges they face in business.
  • Mental Health Support: Drawing from our experience in grief education and mental health work, we provide one-on-one support to individuals in need.
  • Advocacy: We act as a voice for neurodivergent, disabled, and chronically ill people, lobbying for better understanding and support in society and the workplace.
  • Community Partnerships: We collaborate with other nonprofits to extend our reach and impact, such as supporting workshops for women who have experienced domestic violence.

Why we chose to be a CIC

Our journey began in 2015 with a focus on helping bereaved people, and has since evolved to encompass a wider range of support services. We chose to be a CIC because it allows us to:

  1. Maintain our commitment to social good while operating with business efficiency.
  2. Offer corporate training that funds our ability to support individuals who can’t afford services.
  3. Provide a mix of paid and free services, ensuring we can help those most in need.
  4. Advocate for and support neurodivergent, disabled, and chronically ill individuals in various capacities.
  5. Remain flexible in our approach, adapting our services as we identify new community needs.

By supporting our CIC, you’re not just buying a service – you’re contributing to a business that continuously evolves to meet community needs, from corporate training to individual support and advocacy for underrepresented groups.
